The Hut Has Left the Building
November 6, 2011
Noticed a strange empty spot where the WisEnergy Hut once stood? At our recent three-year planning retreat, the board unanimously agreed to sell the hut and use the proceeds to take our weatherization show on the road. On Sunday, November 6, the Hut trundled off to its new home.
The hut has been a highly visible outpost for WISEnergy these past three years, thanks to the generosity of U.S. Bank in lending us the spot to put it in. It’s helped us to establish the WISEnergy brand, meet and chat with lots of Vashonites about weatherization, and make solid progress towards our goal of reducing residential energy consumption 12% by 2012. (PSE’s estimate that residential energy use is down by more than six percent in the last two years gives us hope that we’ve had an impact.)
But weatherizing the island housing stock is just the beginning. The ultimate goal is to move a newly-insulated Vashon away from fossil fuels and towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. To get there, we can’t simply rely on people coming to us. We have to go to them.
In addition to ramping up our digital efforts (via the WE web site, Twitter and Facebook), we’ll be giving talks to business, civic, church and neighborhood groups, partnering with other energy-related groups on the Island and, of course, putting on our third annual energy fair.
So, the hut is gone – sold to a lucky local couple. But WISEnergy lives on.
Want a hut like this? Al Bradley builds and sells them for artist studios, chicken coops or whatever your imagination comes up with.
